Attorney General Pam Bondi has been removed as the head of the Department of Justice. President Donald Trump announced yesterday, April 2, that after 14 months as the nation’s top cop, Bondi would move on to private-sector pastures. Stepping in as interim head is her erstwhile number two, Todd Blanche. While the administration turnover has been low compared to Trump’s first term, chatter in the swamp suggests that the president is looking for a cleaner slate ahead of the midterms.
Bondi: “A Loyal Friend”
Because the actual discussions took place behind closed doors, the public’s first confirmation of the ousting came courtesy of Trump’s Truth Social account. He wrote:
“Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year. Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown in Crime across our Country, with Murders plummeting to their lowest level since 1900. We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future, and our Deputy Attorney General, and a very talented and respected Legal Mind, Todd Blanche, will step in to serve as Acting Attorney General.”
Ahead of this post, the Fourth Estate was busy working back channels, and some outlets are making a case that even more significant reshuffles are afoot.
A Grand Reset
Before the ousting, multiple outlets reported that Bondi was on the chopping block for how she handled the release of the Epstein Files. Blanche pooh-poohed the idea during a Thursday evening interview with Fox’s Jessie Watters. “It’s simply not true,” the acting DOJ head argued. He also denied several other speculative reasons that made the rounds in the media, including that Bondi had allegedly tipped off Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) about the potential release of files related to his association with a suspected Chinese spy, known as “Fang Fang.” “I would not believe that for a second – absolutely, positively not,” Blanche said.
But the rumor mill grinds relentlessly. Sources such as Politico, CNN, and the Daily Mail all posited that further heads would roll.
Politico reported that – according to its sources – Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick would soon be on his way out, as would Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer. And while crystal-ball gazing is rarely an accurate way to pick winners and losers, the idea that Trump might be seeking a major reset ahead of midterms is not beyond belief.
Going to the Mattress
Before delving into the political scene, Trump was arguably one of America’s most prominent and successful businessmen; it’s a trait he has carried over to the White House. In the business world, people are shuffled, removed, promoted, or sidelined, depending on their performance in relation to company goals. This transactional strategy allows an element of dynamism and a heap of flexibility.
