Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) Justice Samuel Alito was quietly transported to a hospital after reportedly falling ill at a Federalist Society symposium dinner last month, CNN reported.

The outlet reported on Friday, per “individuals with knowledge of the matter,” that the judge was attending a dinner held in his honor on March 20th at the University of Pennsylvania law school in Philadelphia when he experienced a health episode that led to him being taken to a hospital.

Alito, who turned 76 on Wednesday, April 1st, was reportedly evaluated and administered fluids for dehydration before returning to his home in Virginia with his security team that night. The justice was also “thoroughly checked” by his personal doctor afterward.

Alito has attended oral arguments and appeared in good health at the Supreme Court in the two weeks since the incident. He even appeared in court on his birthday when President Donald Trump attended proceedings as the justices weighed his restrictions on birthright citizenship — a first for a sitting president.

He is the second-oldest justice on the bench after 77-year-old Clarence Thomas, whose birthday is June 23rd. Alito has served on the High Court for two decades, having been nominated by former President George W. Bush to succeed Justice Sandra Day O’Connor — the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court — following her retirement in 2006.

Speculation has mounted regarding whether Justice Alito will step down before the conclusion of the Trump presidency in 2028. Such a vacancy would grant the president the opportunity to appoint his fourth justice.

While Alito has remained tight-lipped about his intentions, his October announcement of a forthcoming memoir, “So Ordered: An Originalist’s View of the Constitution, the Court, and Our Country,” has been interpreted by some as a subtle indication that his tenure may be drawing to a close.
