Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse for the party of the left, it does.
If you were tasked with devising the worst possible strategy for a political party already on the ropes, you would likely decide to revive the scandals and toxic ideology responsible for its plummeting popularity. And that is exactly what has happened to Democrats in recent days through self-inflicted wounds, past and present. The profane, unhinged rant of Hunter Biden, the ever-growing toxicity of Zohran Mamdani, and new scandalous revelations about Barack Obama orchestrating a plot to scandalize Donald Trump have seemingly done the impossible, taking a party at its lowest ebb in decades and driving it even deeper into the gutter.
Hunter Eviscerates Allies
Exactly what possessed the embittered son of Joe Biden to rip into longtime colleagues who were left with no choice but to force his father out of the presidential race? Did they really have any other option? Coming on top of his many alarming instances of incoherence and confusion, the epic meltdown of the 46th president in the debate with Trump heard ‘round the world last June would, in the view of most every informed observer, have led to a defeat even worse than that suffered by Kamala Harris. Everyone seems to understand that – except Hunter. Dropping dozens of f-bombs in defaming everyone from George Clooney to David Axelrod to James Carville, Biden the younger burned every remaining bridge from his family to longtime allies and reignited the discussion of the pathetic and long-denied decline of his father. What a gift to Republicans.
Emblematic of Hunter’s tone throughout two little-known podcasts – evidently the only ones still interested in him – was losing his grip over an actor who did the bidding of powerful Democrats by calling for Joe Biden to step aside: “F— him! F— him and f— everybody around him. I don’t have to be f—ing nice … George Clooney is not a f—ing actor. He is a f—ing, I don’t know what he is, he’s a brand.” Notwithstanding the fact that fitting the f-bomb six times into a single sentence is quite an accomplishment, Hunter came off as a ticking time bomb that was finally detonating. The collateral damage will be felt far and wide by reeling Democrats cringing at the very sight of this man, who was both the family bagman and endlessly embarrassing thorn in the side of his father and the entire party.
To Americans concerned about the millions of illegal immigrants and criminals that poured into the country thanks to his father’s open border policies, Hunter had two words – you guessed it: “F— you.” But what most stoked the headlines in his remarks was his declaration that “they” (unspecified) gave his father powerful sleeping pills in the run-up to the infamous debate: “I know exactly what happened in that debate. He flew around the world, basically, the mileage that he could have flown around the world, three times. He’s 81 years old. He’s tired as s—. They give him Ambien to be able to sleep, he gets up on the stage. And he looks like he’s a deer in the headlights.” How exactly does the admission that his father could barely function as president advance the cause for which Hunter was pleading?
But Hunter proved once and for all just how delusional he is with his laughable proclamation that “Joe Biden has got more of our agenda accomplished in four years than any president in history.” And he tried to argue that his father was driven not by reality, but altruism, saying he “did the most selfless thing that I know of any politician in the history of this f—ing country did. He stepped aside to save the party.” Hunter did not spare the two most renowned Democratic strategists of recent decades: “James Carville—who hasn’t run a race in 40 f–ing years—and David Axelrod, who had one success in his political life, and that was Barack Obama. And that was because of Barack Obama—not because of f—ing David Axelrod.” And then he went global, condemning the entire party, saying, “[W]hat the Democratic Party proved is they have no guts.”
The Mamdani Dilemma
Meanwhile, there are few things more embarrassing for a party than to be represented in the year’s most high-profile race by a self-declared socialist who may actually more closely resemble a Marxist. Zohran Mamdani winning the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City has created twin towers of trauma for his party.
The first tower is a palpable anti-American, anti-Jew ideology that has proven to be anathema to the great bulk of Americans, further diminishing an already toxic Democratic brand. The second tower is the bind in which it places prominent Democrats. While the likes of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others on the far-left fringe of the party have embraced Mamdani, no party leaders have yet been willing to endorse him. Placed in an untenable position of being “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” endorse Mamdani, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have so far danced around the question. What message is sent to the public when those at the top of the party hierarchy refuse to get on board with its most prominent nominee?
Fallen Democrats
Then there is the matter of former President Barack Obama and his henchmen, John Brennan, James Comey, and James Clapper. Newly declassified information released by Trump’s Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, leaves the unmistakable impression of chickens finally coming home to roost. Obama, who rarely reacts to Trump’s words or actions, felt compelled to deny Gabbard’s and Trump’s suggestion of criminal misconduct by the 44th president in the ginned-up investigation of Trump’s supposed collusion with Vladimir Putin. And while the likelihood of Obama winding up behind bars is remote, this is yet another black eye for the party and for a president who once commanded the stage but has now descended into irrelevance.
And speaking of humiliation, how about Hillary Clinton? Gabbard revealed that among the hundreds of pages of declassified documents was the Russians’ conclusion that Democratic leaders at the time believed the mental health of the 2016 presidential nominee was “extraordinarily alarming.” Here are the damning words about Clinton from the report: “Clinton suffered from ‘intensified psycho-emotional problems,’ ‘uncontrolled fits of anger, aggression, and cheerfulness.’ Clinton was allegedly on a daily regimen of ‘heavy tranquilizers,’ and while she was afraid of losing, she remained ‘obsessed with a thirst for power.’”
But wait, there’s more. Not to be outdone by Hunter Biden’s unhinged rant, Carville went on a tirade of his own in The New York Times: “Constipated. Leaderless. Confused. A cracked-out clown car. Divided. These are the words I hear my fellow Democrats using to describe our party as of late. The truth is they’re not wrong: The Democratic Party is in shambles.” This is the same Carville who, after lamenting the far-left turn of his party for months on end, wrote a piece for the Times just before the 2024 election entitled “Three Reasons I’m Certain Kamala Harris Will Win.” So much for his political acumen. Once again, while Carville’s harsh criticism of his party rings true, it inspires questions of how such rhetoric is even remotely helpful to the cause.
Carville lamented that Democrats are “steamrolling toward a civilized civil war.” Good point. Given the obliterated state of the party and the fact that things keep spiraling downward, one wonders if anything short of such a radical conflict can save the Democratic Party.
