Revelations of NYC Democratic Socialists of America leader Gustavo Gordillo’s attacks on the governor come as Hochul weighs Mamdani endorsement

A top Zohran Mamdani ally has blasted New York governor Kathy Hochul (D.) as “evil” and seemingly approved of a social media post calling her a “genocidal monster.”
Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the city’s Democratic Socialists of America chapter, was celebrated in Marxist circles as a “key architect” of Mamdani’s upset victory in the Democratic mayoral primary. He and his comrades have already begun planning an expansive left-wing agenda for New York City, a plan with the not-so-subtle name “co-governance.”
The DSA co-chair slammed Hochul as “our evil governor” in a December 2024 X post and appeared to endorse an April 2024 post describing her as a “genocidal monster.”
Revelations of Gordillo’s public attacks on Hochul come as the governor inches ever closer to endorsing Mamdani, who has led mayoral polls since seizing the Democratic Party’s nomination in June.
“We’ve had some candid conversations about his leadership and where the city could go,” Hochul said of Mamdani in a Monday interview with PIX 11. “He is the candidate who has reached out to me to talk about these things. Let’s leave it at that.”
Hochul is not the only elected Democrat to appear in Gordillo’s crosshairs. The socialist organizer took aim at Rep. George Latimer (N.Y.), a member of the party’s moderate wing who ousted DSA favorite (and fire alarm aficionado) Jamaal Bowman in a 2024 congressional primary.
Gordillo called Latimer a “Ku Klux Klan Grand Dragon” and a “segregationist” in a series of X posts ahead of the primary date.
Mamdani’s allies in the mainstream media have attempted to sanitize his radical views, with the New York Times claiming that the “closest Mr. Mamdani gets to socialism is in his belief in treating people more equitably,” as the candidate has started and stopped on a path toward cleaning up some of his rhetoric ahead of the general election in November.
Gordillo, though, has made no similar attempts to hide his extremism. He has reposted X posts celebrating Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels and convicted Soviet spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
When a colleague visited Marx’s grave in London, Gordillo encouraged him “to start a Marxist caucus” in the DSA. He has also publicly called for a DSA “campaign to get the US to return the 8 states it stole from Mexico.”
Polls have shown Mamdani as the overwhelming favorite to win the mayoral race in November since he secured the Democratic Party’s nomination, with independent candidates Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams, as well as Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, running distantly behind him.
Representatives for Hochul and Mamdani did not respond to Washington Free Beacon requests for comment. Gustavo Gordillo did not return comment requests either.
