BREAKING: Supreme Court Rejects Same-Sex Marriage Petition

Justices decline to review a 2015 appeals court ruling against former Kentucky county clerk.

The Supreme Court on Nov. 10 rejected a request to revisit a 2015 decision recognizing a constitutional right to same-sex marriage. The petition to review was brought by Kim Davis, a former county clerk in Kentucky who was sued after she refused to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple.

David Moore and David Ermold were each awarded $50,000 in a jury trial. Kim Davis appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, but the jury decision was upheld. As a county clerk, Davis’ job description included issuing marriage licenses. Davis argued that same-sex marriage “had no basis in the Constitution.”
