No commitment yet from Moscow, but Ukraine gives the nod to new deal.
Tuesday Nov. 25: After weekend discussions in Geneva between American, Ukrainian, and European negotiators, a US official told ABC News, “The Ukrainians have agreed to the peace deal. There are some minor details to be sorted out but they have agreed to a peace deal.”
U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll reportedly met with a Russian delegation in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates Monday to follow up on the Geneva talks. Moscow has indicated that the plan currently being discussed – originally, a 28-point plan that has been cut down to 19 points – is the “only substantive” framework for a way forward. However, the Russians have not committed.
On Nov. 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that “after Geneva, there are fewer points, no longer 28, and a lot of the right things have been taken into account in this framework.” The following day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov acknowledged that Moscow had received the revised proposal “through unofficial channels” and that several issues needed “clarification.”
President Trump also seemed cautiously optimistic, writing in a Nov. 24 social media post, “Don’t believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening.”
