Unfortunately, when it comes to the stealing of tax dollars, Americans are in a tip-of-the-iceberg moment.
Minnesota has probably never had so much publicity, and none of it is good. A massive fraud scandal, an embattled governor abandoning his re-election bid, and an immigrant community with questionable loyalties are at the center of it all. And the news keeps coming as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Jan. 6 began what Acting Director Todd Lyons described as “the largest immigration operation ever.”
Since it began operating in Minneapolis some weeks ago, ICE has made more than 1,000 arrests and is now surging more agents into Minnesota. Investigations into what appears to be an extensive network of fake day care centers and medical clinics – mostly set up by Somali immigrants and Americans of Somali descent – are widening. These phony operations appear to have defrauded the residents of Minnesota and the American people out of something like $10 billion. The actual figure, at this point, is not known.
The problem may go well beyond the state lines of Minnesota, though. On the last day of 2025, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services said federal childcare financial support to all states would be paused until each state provided records proving the funds “are being spent legitimately.”
Not Just Minnesota
ABC News reported Jan. 6 that it received a written statement from HHS confirming that $10 billion in federal funding to five Democrat-controlled states is being frozen. Those states are California, Colorado, Illinois, New York – and Minnesota. “For too long, Democrat-led states and Governors have been complicit in allowing massive amounts of fraud to occur under their watch,” the statement read in part.
Also on Jan. 6, Texas Republican Wesley Hunt introduced a House bill that would terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalis currently residing illegally in the United States. The bill would also end TPS for illegals from Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
Hunt told Fox News Digital, “It’s important that we ensure that those entering our country are properly vetted, and they clearly have not been properly vetted. So, what we are trying to do is ensure that we address this, we stop this.” He also took a shot at the governor of Minnesota and former vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, who on Jan. 5 announced that he would not be seeking a third term. “I mean, looking at Tim Walz’s decision not to seek reelection – where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” Hunt said. “There certainly is more to come out of this situation. [Walz] was clearly complicit in what was going on. That’s why he’s not seeking reelection.”
The Trump administration has been locked in a months-long battle with various federal judges over stripping TPS, and the Supreme Court will be considering a related case this year.
Fraud Goes Back Years
The Minnesota scandal only recently gained national attention, and the establishment media are still trying their best not to report on it at all or at least play it down. However, the misappropriation of funds has been going on for several years, dating back at least to when COVID assistance money was handed out to people who were falsely claiming to be feeding children or providing healthcare services.
According to USA Today, more than 80 people – most of Somali origin – have been charged by the Department of Justice since 2022. More than 60 of those were convicted on various fraud-related charges.
A familiar pattern is playing out here, it would seem. When President Donald Trump returned to the White House and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) started looking into waste in Washington, DC, it uncovered perhaps far more irregularities, waste, and shady slush funds than many people expected. Perhaps too much, because even Republicans started to get the jitters, and DOGE is essentially now no more.
Minnesota appears to be the tip of another iceberg, as the Trump administration turns its eyes toward California and other states. That’s all well and good, but as Liberty Nation News recently wondered, will anyone in power – those at the tops of the ladders – ever be truly held accountable?
