The Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Texas is finally starting to heat up. James Talarico, the baby-faced state lawmaker running against congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, has been slammed as a racist for allegedly dissing former congressman Colin Allred (D., Texas) as a “mediocre black man.”

Allred, who withdrew from the Senate race last year after Crockett announced her campaign, lashed out in a video message posted on social media. “I understand that James Talarico had the temerity and the audacity to say to a black woman that he had signed up to run against a mediocre black man—meaning me—not a formidable, intelligent black woman—meaning Jasmine Crockett,” Allred said.

The source of Talarico’s alleged comment appears to be a TikTok post from a Dallas-based political commentator named Morgan (@morga_tt), who describes herself as the host of The Profoundly Unserious Podcast. In a video posted Sunday evening, the TikTok user said Talarico told her that “he signed up to run against a mediocre black man, not a formidable and intelligent black woman,” and went on to explain “why this is problematic.”

Allred, who is running for Congress, said the insulting remarks prompted him to get off the sidelines and endorse Crockett for Senate. “Go vote for Jasmine Crockett,” he said in the video. “This man [Talarico] should not be our nominee for the United States Senate. … Don’t come for me unless I send for you, OK, James? And keep my name out of your mouth while you’re at it.” Allred also delivered a message to “all the young black men out there,” encouraging them to shrug off the “haters” who try to put them down.

Polls show Talarico and Crockett in a tight race ahead of the primary election on March 3. Crockett is already a national celebrity in the Democratic Party, known for her profanity-laced rants and ham-fisted theatrics. Some Democratic supporters have argued that Crockett has no chance of winning a general election in Texas. On at least one occasion, Crockett’s liberal critics have been forced to issue groveling apologies for expressing “structurally violent” opinions about a prominent black woman running.

Crockett has shrugged off the criticism, arguing that voters shouldn’t be so concerned about electability. “My theory of the case is this: If you believe we’re going to lose anyway, then what difference does it make if it’s me or anybody else?” she said last month. “If you think it’s a losing cause, then who cares?”

The debate over Crockett’s ability to win in Texas has largely ignored the fact that Talarico is also an obnoxious liberal who is on video proclaiming that “God is non-binary.”

Good luck to all!
