Argentinian President Javier Milei was evacuated by his security team during a campaign stop after protesters started hurling rocks and other objects at him.

On Wednesday, Milei, accompanied by his sister and chief of staff Karina Milei, stood in the back of a moving pickup truck during a rally for the upcoming local and midterm elections.

However, tensions escalated when protesters began charging the vehicle, with at least one rock striking its hood and other objects flying over the Libertarian president’s head.

As chants of “Get out, Milei!” rang out, the truck accelerated away from the scene. Clashes also broke out within the crowd itself as chaos spread.

Milei’s spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, stated on X that opposition members “attacked” the president’s convoy and that no one was injured.

English translation: Militants of the old politics, pure Kirchnerism, and a model of violence that only the cavemen of the past want: they attacked with stones the caravan where the President of the Nation was located. There are no injuries. The only thing there is, is many who are heading toward the most absolute of oblivions: Kirchnerism never again. End.

Following the incident, Milei posted a photo of himself giving a thumbs-up gesture alongside his sister and a congressman, criticizing the opposition for “throwing stones empty of ideas, once again resorting to violence.”

At the time, Milei’s convoy was traveling through Lomas de Zamora, a district in Buenos Aires province known as a stronghold of the Peronist opposition. The incident also comes as several individuals close to Milei, including his sister, are currently involved in a corruption scandal over bribery allegations related to Argentina’s disability agency.

On Friday, Argentinian authorities raided multiple properties as part of a criminal investigation into a suspected kickback scheme involving Diego Spagnuolo, the former head of the disability agency. Nonetheless, Milei’s government has already dismissed Spagnuolo “as a preventive measure,” according to his administration.

At the event on Wednesday, Milei publicly addressed the scandal for the first time. After his convoy, he continued to criticize Spagnuolo, according to local media reports.

“Everything he says is a lie. We’re going to take him to court and prove he lied,” he told reporters.

Audio recordings obtained by Argentinian media feature a voice resembling Spagnuolo discussing bribery within the agency and hinting at payments made to Karina Milei.
