A bomb has gone off in a Jewish school in the capital city of the Netherlands, Amsterdam, in “a deliberate attack against the Jewish community,” according to the city’s mayor.
Mayor Femke Halsema said in a Saturday press release that an overnight explosion in a residential area on the south side of the city, which caused some damage to the school.
“This is a cowardly act of aggression toward the Jewish community,” Halsema said. “I understand the fear and anger of Jewish Amsterdammers. They are increasingly confronted with antisemitism, and that is unacceptable.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
Halsema reported that police obtained Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance footage of an individual planting the explosive near Cheider, a Jewish school.
Security had already been heightened at Jewish institutions and places of worship in the Dutch capital after an arson attack at a synagogue on Friday. Police arrested four suspects, including three men, aged 18 to 19, as well as a 17-year-old boy, from a stopped car that matched the description of that of one of the perpetrators and had driven suspiciously close to another synagogue later that day.
Police said they launched a “large-scale investigation into this serious incident,” and called for witnesses to step forward.
Justice Minister David van Weel noted that the violent acts were carried out consecutively.
“Two nights in a row a cowardly attack with an explosive at a Jewish building. First in Rotterdam, now in Amsterdam,” van Weel remarked.
Tensions have risen for Jewish citizens around the world amid the joint U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran.
On Thursday, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, 41, drove his car into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan. It was later reported that he had two brothers, a niece and a nephew who were killed in Lebanon by an Israeli strike targeting Hezbollah, an armed proxy group of Iran’s Islamic regime, as part of Operation Roaring Lion, Israel’s name for the joint campaign. His family members were allegedly suspected Hezbollah militants.
