Senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamad on Saturday hailed Canadian, British, and French plans to recognize a Palestinian state as “the fruits of October 7,” crediting Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel with growing Western support for such a state.

“Why are all the countries recognizing a Palestinian state today?” Hamad, a senior member of the Hamas politburo, asked during a Saturday interview on Al Jazeera, according to a translation by the Times of Israel. “Before October 7, did any country dare recognize a Palestinian state?”

“The fruits of October 7 are what caused the entire world to open its eyes to the Palestinian issue,” Hamad went on—”and they are moving toward it with force.”

The remarks came just days after Canadian prime minister Mark Carney, U.K. prime minister Keir Starmer, and French president Emmanuel Macron announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state at the U.N. General Assembly in September. President Donald Trump and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu have condemned the endorsement, with Trump saying the recognition amounts to “rewarding” Palestinian terrorists.

During the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack, Hamas killed more than 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped 251 people, including Americans. Hamas and its ally Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which have cut off all contact with mediators, on Thursday released videos of Israeli hostages Rom Braslavski and Evyatar David—both frail after 664 days in captivity.

“This is what real starvation looks like. The hostages are starved, tortured, and abused,” one X user wrote. “Where is the world’s outrage for the hostages? Their silence is deafening.”

Israeli intelligence estimates that around 20 hostages are still alive in Gaza, along with the bodies of up to 50 others killed in captivity.

Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar quoted Hamad’s remarks and slammed Canada, the United Kingdom, and France for backing Palestinian statehood. “If this [is] who applauds you,” Sa’ar wrote Saturday—”what does it say about you?”
