President Donald Trump announced in a Truth Social post on Wednesday that Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, has asked the United States for a ceasefire.

“Iran’s New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE!” the president proclaimed on Wednesday.

“We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!” he continued.

This aligns with Trump’s Tuesday remarks, in which he suggested that a formal deal with Iran isn’t a prerequisite for a U.S. withdrawal once its objectives are met, forecasting a resolution to the conflict within two to three weeks.

“No, they don’t have to make a deal with me. When we feel that they are, for a long period of time, put into the stone ages, and they won’t be able to come up with a nuclear weapon, then we’ll leave–whether we have a deal or not,” Trump said.

He further declared that the new Iranian regime is more approachable and expressed confidence in their desire to negotiate a deal.

Pezeshkian reportedly stated that Iran has the “necessary will” to end the ongoing conflict, though he still stressed that “guarantees” are needed to prevent a “repeat of the aggression.”

Additionally, according to The Chosun Daily, a South Korea newspaper, President Pezeshkian also emphasized that, “If there is a definite guarantee that attacks by the U.S. and Israel will not recur, we are prepared to end the war.” The foreign outlet cited Iranian state media Press TV as its source.

“According to Iran’s Press TV, President Pezeshkian made these remarks during a phone call with António Costa, the President of the European Council, on the 31st, local time. He emphasized, ‘The only solution to normalize the current situation is for the aggressors to halt military actions.’ He added, ‘Iran has respected the sovereignty of neighboring countries and has never intended to attack them,’ but noted that attacks on U.S. military bases located in those countries were an inevitable choice,” the outlet continued.

President Trump is using the term “new regime president” to characterize the Iranian leadership as having undergone a fundamental shift following the recent transition of power at the very top of the Iranian government.

While Pezeshkian has been Iran’s president since 2024, the most significant change in the Iranian regime occurred on March 8th when Mojtaba Khamenei officially became the Supreme Leader of Iran, succeeding his father, Ali Khamenei. In Iran’s political structure, the president is the head of government, but the Supreme Leader is the head of state and holds ultimate authority over the military, foreign policy, and the judiciary.

Although Pezeshkian has held office for nearly two years, the transition in supreme leadership has uncovered intelligence suggesting the regime is willing to negotiate or de-escalate conflicts to ensure its survival.

Meanwhile, President Trump is expected to deliver an address later on Wednesday evening, providing an “important” update on the conflict in Iran, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
