A member of Texas Democrat Representative Jasmine Crockett’s security team, who was using a fake name throughout his employment, was shot and killed by Dallas police on Wednesday.
Crockett (D-Texas) posted a statement in relation to the matter on X on Monday. She confirmed the death of the man that her team knew as “Mike King.”
“By now, Dallas Police have been able to confirm the death of a member of our security team,” the statement read. “We are saddened and shocked by some of the concerning revelations.”
The Dallas Police Department (DPD) released details of the investigation and fatal shooting of 39-year-old Diamon-Maziarre Robinson, who had used the alias “Mike King.” On February 17th, the Irving Police Department, west of Dallas, issued a bulletin of a vehicle with a stolen U.S. government license plate.
Robinson operated under a stolen identity to establish fraudulent security firms, which he used to broker off-duty employment for legitimate police officers. At the time of the fatal confrontation, he was a fugitive with several active felony warrants and a parole violation.
Dallas Deputy Chief of Police William Griffith noted that the federal agencies Robinson claimed to work for, one of them being the “Special Dignitary Police,” don’t actually exist.
“That agency does not exist within the federal government, so that’s who he portrayed to be…There was no actual federal agency that he worked for that existed,” Griffith explained, noting Robinson possessed IDs claiming he was a part of the fake agency.
“Our team followed all protocols outlined by the House to contract additional security,” Crockett’s statement read.
“We were approved to use this vendor who also provided security services for additional entities in the local community and worked closely with law enforcement agencies including Capitol Police.”
DPD located Robinson on Wednesday as he was driving a white Mercedes. Police attempted to negotiate with him for over an hour before SWAT arrived.
The department explained that Robinson began to exit the car, but then displayed a handgun and abruptly pointed it at officers. In bodycam footage, an officer can be heard shouting “Don’t reach. Don’t do it!” before pulling the gun.
Robinson was quickly shot multiple times, before being declared dead on scene.
Following an investigation, police discovered that Robinson’s handgun had been reported as stolen, and additional firearms were later located in vehicles associated with Robinson, among others at his residence.
In Crockett’s statement, she further claimed that her team was “unable to locate any violent offenses” in Robinson’s criminal history during their hiring process.
“Mike had been in and around our team for years. There was never any reason to suspect that he wasn’t who he held himself out to be. He never endangered our team, worked diligently, coordinated with local law enforcement, and maintained positive relationships throughout the community.”
“What we’re now learning about his past doesn’t fit the person we came to know as Mike King,” it continued.
“The fact that an individual was able to somehow circumvent the vetting processes for something as sensitive as security for members of Congress highlights the loopholes and shortcomings in many of our systems.”
In her X post, Crockett also voiced her belief in redemption, stating that she wished the tragedy could have been avoided.
“As a former public defender, I’ve always believed people are more than the worst thing they’ve ever done. I believe in redemption. The man we knew showed up with respect, care, and commitment to protecting others,” she said.
