President Donald Trump voiced his disapproval of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s decision not to induct eight-time Super Bowl winning coach Bill Belichick in his first year of eligibility.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that Belichick failed to receive the 40 votes needed from the Hall of Fame selection committee, a 50-person panel of media members and inducted former players and coaches, for enshrinement in Canton, Ohio. Many considered this shocking, as he was widely expected to be a first-ballot inductee.

“It is the same mindset that gave pro football the new and unwatchable “Sissy” Kickoff Rule, that made it possible for Bill Belichick to not be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Both are ridiculous and should be overturned!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“I don’t understand it,” Tom Brady, who won six Super Bowls while playing under Belichick with the Patriots for 20 seasons as quarterback, stated. “I mean, I was with him every day. If he’s not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there’s really no coach that should ever be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.”

Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as the head coach of the New England Patriots and two titles as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, has a career record of 333 wins and 178 losses. He built his legacy leading the Patriots for 24 years, and many football fans consider him one of the best coaches in NFL history.

According to reports, Belichick’s exclusion from the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026 may stem from lingering resentments over scandals like Spygate, with influential figures such as former general manager Bill Polian reportedly advocating for a one-year delay as penance. Belichick himself was reportedly puzzled and disappointed, questioning how six Super Bowl wins as a head coach were insufficient for first-ballot induction.
