President Donald Trump is intensifying his push for Republican lawmakers in Congress to urgently pass the SAVE America Act, formerly known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, calling on them to pursue it “with PASSION” and at the expense of everything else — while rejecting any watered-down version.
In a recent Truth Social post, Trump described the legislation as a defining battle for the nation’s soul, emphasizing that providing proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration and photo ID to vote in federal elections are essential duties to protect election integrity.
“This is a Country Defining fight for the Soul of our Nation!” Trump declared.
Proponents of the bill maintain that if you need a government-issued photo ID to board a plane, open a bank account, or even enter many federal buildings, then it’s absurd that the same basic security measure isn’t required to cast a vote in federal elections. Airports enforce strict ID checks to protect public safety and prevent fraud on a single flight, yet many left-wing activists and politicians insist that demanding identification at the ballot box is “voter suppression” or an insurmountable barrier. In reality, it’s the bare minimum to ensure only eligible American citizens decide who runs our country, Republicans argue.
Although the bill has already passed the House, it still faces significant hurdles in the Senate due to the filibuster and Democrat opposition, with critics claiming it could create barriers that “disenfranchise millions of eligible voters” lacking easy access to required documents.
Nonetheless, Trump continues to rally GOP support ahead of the 2026 midterms.

In a numbered list in a follow-up post, Trump summarized the goals of the proposed legislation, which passed in the House on February 11, 2026, by a 218-213 vote.
First on Trump’s list was “ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW VOTER I.D.” Secondly, Trump said, “ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP IN ORDER TO VOTE.” He also called for mail-in ballots to be eliminated, except in cases of “illness, disability, travel, or for military personnel.”
The bill must garner 60 votes to overcome a likely deadlock. However, resistance is already firm, as Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has criticized the measure as “federal overreach,” accusing it of undermining the authority of states to run their own elections.
Murkowski’s opposition to the SAVE America Act — despite her voiced “support” for voter ID in principle — has led many conservatives to brand her a classic RINO (Republican In Name Only).
Analysts agree that it’s difficult to reconcile how any true Republican senator could place full faith in Democrat-controlled blue states to administer elections with unwavering integrity and adherence to the rule of law, especially given documented concerns over lax verification, ballot harvesting, and inconsistent enforcement in those jurisdictions.
By rejecting a straightforward federal safeguard that demands proof of citizenship for registration and photo ID to vote, Murkowski appears to prioritize “state autonomy,” particularly Alaska’s unique logistical challenges, over the broader imperative of closing obvious vulnerabilities that could undermine national election security.
This stance not only alienates core GOP voters but fuels legitimate skepticism about whether her loyalty lies more with bipartisan compromise than with defending the integrity of the ballot box.
Even among those who favor the bill’s goals, procedural hurdles remain a significant sticking point.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) says he supports the legislation but has firmly rejected suggestions to terminate the filibuster to pass it. Additionally, Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) has warned against utilizing a “talking filibuster” — a tactic where senators speak for hours on end to delay proceedings — as a back-door method to get the act over the 60-vote threshold.
Despite these warnings, several Republicans have suggested that this grueling tactic may be the only viable path to move the bill forward.”
Among those pushing for this strategy is Representative Mike Lee (R-Utah).
“President Trump asked us to pass the SAVE America Act without delay, identifying it as our top legislative priority. Requiring and exhausting a Democrat speaking filibuster is the only plan to pass the bill. While that approach would require an investment of time and effort by Senate Republicans, victory would prove more than worth the hard work,” Lee said.
Ultimately, the GOP argues that the bill establishes clear, commonsense safeguards for federal elections by requiring individuals to present documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote.
The bill also mandates that states actively maintain accurate voter rolls by regularly reviewing registrations and implementing programs — using reliable federal and state data sources — to identify and remove any non-citizens who may have been erroneously registered. These proactive measures can help restore confidence in election integrity by closing loopholes that could allow ineligible voting while preserving access for verified American citizens, according to President Trump.
