The left is caught in what some are labeling a “death spiral.”
Perhaps all the recent wins for Donald Trump from the US Supreme Court and now in Congress are becoming too much for those on the left to handle. Watching the president sign the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (BBB) on Independence Day has triggered an outburst of frustration, near apoplexy, causing nothing short of Democratic hysteria. Indeed, the chief executive is riding high and has successfully navigated major party hurdles to gain passage of the bill through Congress. For months, it’s been nothing but whining and gnashing of teeth over what is now the law of the land. However, the fact that the fight is over and Democrats have lost has caused many to double down in their opposition to all things Trump, and they are lashing out in apocalyptic language.
New York Post columnist Miranda Devine summed it up on Fox News succinctly: “The Democrats are in a death spiral and all they have are these attractive holograms like [Zohran] Mamdani being the latest.” Even before everything was signed, sealed, and delivered, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear labeled the legislation the “worst bill I’ve seen in my lifetime” in a lengthy interview with the Morning Joe satraps on MSNBC.
Democratic political guru James Carville went out on a limb and prognosticated, “Political anthropologists are going to look back at this, and it‘s going to be called a mass extinction event because there are a lot of them going to be extinct when people go to the polls voting for this.” Appearing with Carville on CNN was fellow strategist Paul Begala, who believes the new law will cause the Republicans to tank in the next election.
Democratic Hysteria on Overdrive
Criticism was sharp and harsh from the Massachusetts Democratic Congressional Delegation. Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) predicted: “House Democrats will spend every day of the next 16 months making sure moms, dads, seniors, and veterans know that Republicans took away their health care, raised their energy bills, and hiked their grocery costs.” Clark summed up her condemnation of the legislation by saying, “This is not what the American people voted for, and they will not forget this outright betrayal. We will make sure of it.”
Although it’s still early days, not much has happened in the way of leftist-inspired protests. Outside Trump Tower, located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, fewer than a hundred people gathered to protest the BBB on July 4. Rise and Resist political action group member Julie DeLaurier told local news outlet AMNY that “the protesters were gut-punched and horrified at what she described as Republicans’ ‘gleeful’ cruelty,” adding that “[S]he joined the protest because it was ‘better than sitting home and crying.’”
Promises Made, Promises Kept
The odd thing about all this vitriol on the left is that there is really very little in the law that is new. As a candidate, Trump promised to address waste, fraud, and abuse, which is what the Medicaid cuts are aimed at abolishing. The legislation in no way cuts Granny’s Medicare benefits, but you will hear the exact opposite from some leftists. He promised to continue tax cuts that were set to expire, and this law accomplishes that directive. He promised to finish building the border wall and increase defense spending. Check and check. Additionally, modified versions of his promises to forgo taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security were included in the lengthy bill.
The passage of this legislation is evidence that while Mr. Trump is a man of many words, he is also a man of action. His plans for the country are ambitious and bold, and while concessions had to be made for the bill to pass, he essentially got what he wanted. Now it appears his primary challenge will be to politically outflank the Democratic hysteria and do what he came to do.
Over on the social media platform X, Will Johnson, a spokesperson for the conservative outlet Live From America TV, replied to the frenzy on the left: “Liberals are apoplectic, practically frothing at the mouth, over the Big Beautiful Bill’s passage—a legislative monstrosity they scream is a full-on assault on democracy.” He concluded with: “So all of y’all buckle up, America is about to explode with beautiful-ness.” And this will happen despite all the temper tantrums brought to you by the Democrats.
