A U.S. Secret Service (USSS) agent assigned to former first lady Jill Biden accidentally shot himself in the leg at Philadelphia International Airport, according to authorities.

Just after 8:30 a.m. local time, on Friday, the unnamed agent was on duty when his firearm reportedly discharged. At the time, he was inside an unmarked Chevrolet SUV near the “1 PIA Way” access point and the Pennsylvania Tower, CBS News reported.

“On Friday morning just after 8:30, an on-duty U.S. Secret Service Special Agent suffered a non-life-threatening injury following a negligent discharge while handling a service weapon at the Philadelphia International Airport during a protective assignment,” the Secret Service said in a statement.

“There was no impact to the protectee’s [Jill Biden’s] movement and they were not present at the time of the incident.”

The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility will be reviewing the details and circumstances surrounding the incident, a spokesperson continued, adding, “we are grateful for our law enforcement and public safety partners who provided medical assistance.”

“There were no reported injuries to any other individuals and the special agent is being evaluated at an area hospital in stable condition,” the agency further stated.

Under the Former Presidents Protection Act of 2012, both Jill Biden and former President Joe Biden are entitled to lifetime Secret Service protection — unless they decline it for any reason.

Last year, President Donald Trump terminated the USSS protective detail for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Under federal law, former vice presidents and their spouses typically receive protection for only six months after leaving office — a period that should have naturally concluded in July 2025. However, Biden had previously used his executive authority to extend Harris’ protection for an additional 18 months. The administration did not publicly disclose the specific security rationale behind the extension at the time of the signing.
